Where are the best areas to rent an apartment in Rome?

Trastevere, Prati, and Testaccio are the three strongest apartment neighbourhoods in Rome. Trastevere has the most character and the most expensive apartments — its medieval buildings are converted into studios and one-bedroom flats that feel unlike anywhere else in Europe. Prati offers larger apartments at lower rates in a residential area with excellent local shops and easy Vatican access. Testaccio is the most genuinely local — a neighbourhood built around the old slaughterhouse market, now one of Rome's best food areas.

For longer stays, the Garbatella and Ostiense neighbourhoods to the south are worth exploring. These were workers' districts in the 1920s and still have a strong neighbourhood identity — excellent local restaurants, morning markets, and apartment availability at rates that make a Rome long-stay genuinely viable. They're on the Metro B line, 20 minutes from Termini.

Is renting an apartment in Rome cheaper than staying in a hotel?

For couples staying four or more nights, apartments in Trastevere or Prati are frequently competitive with mid-range hotels. Rome has a high concentration of excellent local food shops — a kitchen lets you shop at Testaccio market and eat well without the coperto charge. For groups of three or four, an apartment is almost always better value.

What's typically included in a Rome apartment rental?

Fully serviced apartments include linen, towels, a kitchen (hob, oven, fridge), and Wi-Fi. Most include weekly housekeeping for stays of five nights or more. Rome's older buildings occasionally lack lifts — particularly in Trastevere where the medieval fabric is preserved. This is noted per listing.

Need to know: apartments in Rome

Are apartments cheaper than hotels in Rome?

For couples staying four nights or more in spring or summer, yes — particularly in Prati and Testaccio where apartment quality is high and hotel competition on price is strong. In Trastevere, well-located apartments are priced at a premium but still often beat the equivalent hotel for space and character.

What's included in a serviced apartment in Rome?

Fully equipped kitchen, linen and towels, Wi-Fi, and utilities. Some Trastevere properties include a private courtyard or roof terrace. Parking is rare in central Rome — the city is not designed for car-based travel and the historic centre has significant access restrictions.

Do Rome apartments have a minimum stay?

Most require two to three nights. In peak months (April–May, July–August), some Trastevere properties extend minimums to four nights. Single-night stays in Rome are better served by the city's range of small guesthouses and boutique hotels.
