From the archivist
Rome's accommodation offer is as layered as the city itself. The Centro Storico puts you inside the ancient grid — expensive but extraordinary in the morning before the crowds arrive. Trastevere is the neighbourhood that visitors fall in love with: medieval streets, ivy-covered facades, and a dining scene that's still largely local. Prati, across the river from the Vatican, offers excellent value in a residential neighbourhood with easy access to the major sights.
The best accommodation decisions in Rome are often made against the grain. A small guesthouse in Trastevere or Testaccio gives you a more genuine reading of the city than a central business hotel — and the difference in nightly rate can fund several excellent dinners. Rome is compact enough that no well-chosen neighbourhood puts you more than 30 minutes from anything worth seeing.
Common questions
What's the best area of Rome to stay in?
Trastevere for atmosphere and neighbourhood life. Prati for Vatican access and excellent local value. Centro Storico for maximum proximity to the ancient sights. Testaccio for the best authentic food scene. Each has a distinct character; the right choice depends on what version of Rome you're visiting.
Where to stay in Rome on a budget?
Prati and Testaccio offer the best budget accommodation in Rome — genuine residential areas with good transport links and local infrastructure. Staying near Termini station is convenient but the immediate surrounding area is generic; push one or two stops toward the centre for better results at similar prices.
What's the cheapest month to stay in Rome?
January and February are the cheapest months — the city is quieter, the Vatican Museums are manageable, and the weather is mild by northern European standards. November and early December also offer good value before the Christmas period. Avoid June through August for budget accommodation; peak season pricing is significant.
Is Rome family-friendly for accommodation?
Yes — but the city's topography (cobblestones, hills, uneven pavements) makes navigating with prams and young children more demanding than flat cities. Trastevere is particularly good for families — manageable streets, excellent local food, and a neighbourhood rhythm that accommodates all ages. Self-catering apartments offer kitchen access, which matters for families with young children.
