From the archivist
Paris rewards the visitor who pays attention to arrondissement. The 6th and 7th are the iconic Left Bank — elegant, expensive, and close to the Musée d'Orsay and Luxembourg Gardens. The Marais (3rd and 4th) has the strongest concentration of independent hotels with character. The 11th and 10th are where younger Parisians live and where the best new restaurants are opening — and where accommodation is still comparatively affordable.
Unlike cities where central is always right, Paris is dense enough that you're rarely more than two Métro stops from anything worth doing. A well-chosen apartment in the 11th arrondissement puts you 15 minutes from the Louvre and in the middle of the city's best neighbourhood food scene — a combination that beats a tourist-facing hotel near Notre-Dame in almost every dimension.
Common questions
What's the best arrondissement to stay in Paris?
The Marais (3rd–4th) for first-time visitors: central, walkable, and culturally rich. The 11th for returning visitors who want a more local experience. The 6th for the full Left Bank mythology. The 1st is geographically central but hospitality-hotel dominated — interesting properties are harder to find.
Where to stay in Paris on a budget?
The 10th, 11th, and 18th arrondissements (Montmartre area, away from Sacré-Cœur itself) offer the best budget accommodation. Staying two arrondissements from the centre cuts costs significantly without meaningfully adding to travel time — the Métro is fast enough that the distinction barely matters.
What's the cheapest month to stay in Paris?
January and February offer the lowest prices. August is paradoxically quieter in some ways — many Parisians leave — but tourist-facing accommodation stays expensive. The shoulder seasons of March and October offer the best combination of reasonable prices and good conditions.
Is Paris family-friendly for accommodation?
Paris is family-friendly once you account for the apartment-heavy accommodation supply. Self-catering apartments in the 16th or near the Bois de Boulogne are practical for families with young children. Many hotels in the Marais offer family rooms or connecting suites.
