Why stay in London?

London rewards travellers who treat it as a collection of neighbourhoods rather than a single destination. Staying in Shoreditch gives you a completely different experience to Notting Hill or South Bank — the hotel you choose sets the tone for how you experience the city. Don't default to central; think about which part of London you actually want to inhabit.

The city's size is both its challenge and its advantage. There's always somewhere interesting within walking distance of wherever you stay, and the tube makes the rest accessible in under 30 minutes. A well-chosen hotel in Marylebone or Clerkenwell puts you closer to the London that locals actually use than anything in the tourist hotel cluster around Leicester Square.

Common questions

FAQs: Need to know about London accommodation

What's the best area of London to stay in?

For first-time visitors: Covent Garden or South Bank for easy access to landmarks. For something more local: Shoreditch, Marylebone, or Brixton all have strong accommodation options and genuine neighbourhood character. Avoid Oxford Street and Leicester Square — the hotels are generic and the surroundings exhausting.

Where to stay in London on a budget?

Hostels in Elephant & Castle and Hackney offer the best value. Budget hotels in zones 2–3 are significantly cheaper than equivalent quality in zone 1 — the tube makes the distance irrelevant for most itineraries. Look for flexible-rate bookings if your dates are movable.

What's the cheapest month to stay in London?

January and February offer the lowest accommodation prices. August bank holiday and Christmas are the most expensive periods. The shoulder seasons — March to April and October to November — offer reasonable prices with good weather odds.

Is London family-friendly for accommodation?

Yes. Most hotels can accommodate families, and the city has excellent infrastructure for children — the Natural History Museum, Science Museum, and most major parks are free. Self-catering apartments in residential neighbourhoods like Notting Hill or Islington give families more space and kitchen access.
