Edinburgh Museum Pass
Edinburgh's major museums – the National Museum of Scotland, Scottish National Gallery, and Scottish National Portrait Gallery among them – are permanently free under Scottish Government policy, so no dedicated museum pass is needed to access them. For visitors planning to visit Edinburgh Castle or other Historic Environment Scotland properties, the Historic Scotland Explorer Pass is the relevant product. This page covers how the Explorer Pass works, what it includes, and when it makes financial sense compared with buying individual tickets.
Everything in the pass
What's included
Historic Scotland Explorer Pass
Managed by Historic Environment Scotland, the Explorer Pass covers 77+ properties across Scotland including Edinburgh Castle, Stirling Castle, and Urquhart Castle. Available in 5-day and 14-day consecutive options; approximate price for the 14-day pass is £44 for adults (verify current pricing at historicenvironment.scot before booking).
Free national museums
Scotland's major national museums require no ticket or pass – entry is permanently free. This includes the National Museum of Scotland (Chambers Street), Scottish National Gallery (The Mound), Scottish National Portrait Gallery (Queen Street), and Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. Just walk in.
Queue bypass at key castles
The Explorer Pass includes priority access at Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle, which is genuinely useful in peak summer when standard queues can run 45 minutes or more. It also includes a 20% discount on audio guides at both castles and at Glasgow Cathedral.
Edinburgh Castle included
Edinburgh Castle – the city's defining paid attraction, home to the Scottish Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny, and the One O'Clock Gun – is one of the Explorer Pass's headline inclusions. Standard adult entry is approximately £19.50–£21.50 at the gate, making it the single largest break-even driver for the pass.
What's not covered
The Explorer Pass does not include the Palace of Holyroodhouse (managed by the Royal Collection Trust), Camera Obscura, The Real Mary King's Close, Dynamic Earth, or any of the free national museums. It's a Historic Environment Scotland product only – everything else requires a separate ticket or the Edinburgh City Pass.
Where to buy
Buy the Explorer Pass directly at historicenvironment.scot or tickets.historic-scotland.gov.uk. It is also sold at Edinburgh Castle ticket offices, though buying online in advance is recommended in summer when the castle sells out. The pass activates on the day of first use.
Common questions
FAQs
Is the Edinburgh Explorer Pass worth it?
The 14-day Explorer Pass (approximately £44) breaks even at two mid-sized Historic Scotland properties. Edinburgh Castle alone costs approximately £19.50–£21.50, so if you add one more property – Stirling Castle (also approximately £19.50) or Urquhart Castle – you've already recouped the pass cost. The value case is strongest for visitors on a wider Scotland road trip. For a pure Edinburgh city break, the standard pass is harder to justify unless you're also doing a day trip to Stirling.
Do I need a museum pass for Edinburgh's free museums?
No. Scotland's major national museums have been permanently free since 2004. The National Museum of Scotland, Scottish National Gallery, Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art all require no ticket and no pass – you walk in. The only significant pass relevant to Edinburgh's heritage sites is the Historic Scotland Explorer Pass, which covers the Castle and other paid properties. There is no dedicated Edinburgh museum pass equivalent to, say, the Firenze Card.
Where can I buy the Historic Scotland Explorer Pass?
Buy directly at historicenvironment.scot or tickets.historic-scotland.gov.uk. You can also purchase on arrival at Edinburgh Castle's ticket office, but this is not recommended in summer when the castle frequently sells out of same-day slots. The pass activates on the day you first use it, so you can buy it ahead of your trip and start when you arrive.
